The Square of 9 could be considered an exotic section in relation to Gann analysis. At first glance it appears to be a jumble of numbers , but closer inspection reveals that it is a simple clockwise spiral in the shape of a square.

Contrary to what a number of proponents ( especially those that are selling various versions of this tool ) would like to you to believe, there is nothing mystical or about the Square of 9. It's a simple mathematical structure.

Perhaps its the origins of the Square of 9, believed to be ancient Babylonian, that adds to this mystery. As with all these tools... keeping it simple generally yields the best results.
Square of 9 Structure
Starting from the center ( 1 ) and following the numbers as they unwind, an infinite spiral becomes apparent. Looking at the lower left corner of the grid, marked in blue, you see the squares of the odd numbers... 3,5,7,9,11.. giving.. 9,25,49,81,121, with each Square being a distinct Square within the structure. Unlike the Fibonacci spiral which expands at a constant rate (161.8%), the Square of 9 expands at a constant numeric rate, but a decaying expansion rate. For example:
  • 9 to 25 ... Growth rate : 2.777
  • 49 to 81 ... Growth rate : 1.65306
  • 81 to 121... Growth rate : 1.49382
It is this decaying rate, that has an impact in using this Tool as an effective marker of price support and resistance.
